why we do what we do
Locally I volunteer to help the Jefferson Forest Band Boosters and participate in the Lynchburg Mustaches for Kids. M4K improves the quality of life for local children through fundraising, partnering with local charities and businesses, and having a little bit of fun with facial hair. In 2021, MK4 raised over $500k and over $1M the past 4 years for the Boys and Girls Club of Lynchburg, CASA of Central VA, Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Central VA, and the Jubilee Family Development Center.
Professionally, I volunteer my time to two groups – Water Reach and the Community Engineering Corps. Water Reach provides technical support to small and rural communities in Virginia to ensure safe drinking water and proper sanitation where not available. The CECorps provides a similar service across the United States, and we are currently working with a rural community in Northern California who’s groundwater is contaminated with nitrates.

I am involved with the Knights of Columbus and my church, Holy Name of Mary. For the Knights of Columbus I serve on the Grand Knight Council 595, Faithful Pilot Assembly 1315, and the Color Corps Honor Guard. I serve as Pastoral Council Chair, Usher and Greeter for the Holy Name of Mary.

Being a good father is important to me and so is volunteering to help our local young people. I volunteer for the Pearisburg Recreation Department as a football, baseball and basketball coach.
I am a member of the Pearisburg Lions Club, whose mission is to empower volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace and promote understanding.
I also volunteer my time to help plan and coordinate Narrows Kids’ Fishing Day.

“I currently serve on the Friends of New London Board. In a nutshell, we work towards preserving the history of New London, and saving historic properties in the area. I am also in charge of working on the African American Church Restoration Project, and provide free labor for the project. I am a proctor for an ETSU student that works at H&P, and I am Past President of the Virginia Association of Surveyors – Southern Chapter.”

“As a member of the Mercy Presbyterian Church, I prepare the church bulletin every week for printing, sing on the Worship Team at least twice a month, and I usually “co-facilitate” a ladies’ Bible study.”

“I was influenced by a document I saw in college and have a copy of the “Code of Ethics for Engineers”. Section III.2.a. Engineers are encouraged to participate in civic affairs; career guidance for youths; and work for the advancement of the safety, health, and well-being of their community. I have coached the local Forest Middle School boys basketball team, and coached the AAU high school basketball team, Virginia Bullets. I am a co-founder of a 501(c)3 organization called Virginia Youthful Engineers. We run a week long engineering and science summer camp for 50 fifth and sixth graders. Last August was our 8th season. Currently, I sit on the board of the Future Focus Foundation, volunteer as one of the WatchDOGS (Dads of Great Students) for my daughter’s Bedford County elementary school. Previously, I spent 16 years organizing the local Lynchburg MATHCOUNTS competition prior to creating the engineering camp, and officiated high school basketball for ten years.”
